This post is about Chotu, kid from Govt Children Home (GCH). His left leg is affected by Polio resulting in making him a dependent. We cam across him on one of our regular visit at GCH. He always made us think, we should do something more for him which makes him independant rather than giving extra care for the time we were together.
Some of our Team members took the initiative and after lots of efforts we managed to admit him in M. S. Ramaiah hospital for surgery. It was a challange in itself as Doctors were not willing to admit him because he is an orphan. After getting assurance from us and a care taker, they considered him. From here started the new journey for Chotu.
He is healthier and happier here than GCH. He is getting necessary nourishment and ofcourse attention which is must for a disabled kid. Most important he is learning the benefits of hygine.
With a hope in his eyes and qute smiling face Chotu attracts everybody. He is as mischievous as any other kid of his age, sometimes hard to handle and has a fear from Police (Guards at the gate are Police for him). Idli and dosa being one of his favourite dishes and ofcourse can not resist himself from chocolates and cookies. And by the way he is the most favourite person in his ward.
He has undergone a surgery on last Monday and responding well to the treatment but first week was very tough for the team. He was in utter pain and was inconsolable. Its a really challenging to make a kid (6-7 years ) understand that this pain is going to ease his life.
Even though I was visiting him regularly but could not visit after the surgery but we talk almost evryday and now he has again started giving me the updates of his routine. But still there is a long way to go. He has to live with the Rod which has been inserted in his leg to straighten it for the next 6 months with the regular exercises. He is trying to adjust to the conditions.
I am pretty sure he is a brave kid and will be able to walk very soon like a normal kid. We are waiting for that day eagerly when we'll see Chotu walk without any help. Lets pray that day will come soon.
Will keep you guys posted about his status.
Love,
Mayank
